NOVA SCOTIA - DAY 48 - JULY 20

Another nice day, although a bit warm. Broke camp and backtracked a bit to a Tim Horton's, a ubiquitous chain here in Canada, that tries to pass as a fast food chain, but generally fails. They have coffee anyway. Half of the day I stayed on the main road (boring), but started on the coastal route in the town of Barrington. Speaking of fast food chains, I took a long break at McDonalds in town. McDonalds is really a good choice for bicycle touring for some very specific reasons. They have decent coffee, usually okay wifi, and most importantly they could care less about what goodies you bring into the store to eat. One negative is that there is usually a big shortage of electrical outlets for charging. This place was no exception, however, when I asked about charging things, one young lady pointed to the only outlet in a corner and started moving furniture around so I could set up my little office. I was pleasantly surprised and this only happens in Canada I'm sure.

I haven't found it exceptionally crowded anywhere along this coast, along with the fact of very few rooms. So it's a chicken and egg thing. Would there be more tourists if there were more rooms or are there fewer rooms because they don't get hordes of tourists? While in Barrington I was calling ahead looking for a room or a place to eat. No luck on the room, but while talking to an owner of the Red Cap Restaurant in West Pubnico, I mentioned that I was bicycle touring and she asked if I had a tent. Of course! And she has on occasion let a person camp behind the restaurant. It wasn't fancy and no shower, but dinner and breakfast the next morning were quite good. Last picture is the restaurant. My third night of camping, but who's counting?

NOVA SCOTIA - DAY 47 - JULY 19

My second day in Bridgewater it did rain, a pretty good downpour, but it was over early in the day. Maybe I felt a little guilty for taking it so easy, so when I left I was determined to make some miles. Most of the day, I stayed on the main highway which is an excellent road, but very boring. Just about all of the little towns and stores are along the coastal road, whereas the fast route is mostly just green forest on both sides.

I did get off to go through Liverpool and Brooklyn, because of their names. I stayed on the scenic route only to later get stopped by an old rail trestle that I couldn't get over in Summerville Beach Provincial Park. You can see this on the route provided. Back on the main highway, I made it all the way to Shelburne, a really small town with no rooms available. Never mind, it was a short ride to The Islands Provincial Park, where I had a lovely camp site overlooking a bay and in the woods. This was my longest day of pedaling (79 miles) so far and only my 2nd night of camping.

NOVA SCOTIA - DAY 45 - JULY 17

After my pleasant home stay near Chester, I continued along the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The scenery is nothing like the jaw dropping grandeur of most of Iceland, but a more genteel, more populated, less hilly, forested, and with ocean and bay views. The local climate remains hot and humid. The next very pretty village I come to is Mahone Bay with some very large churches and beautiful, old, and well kept homes. Continuing on to a must stop visit of Lunenburg. This town is a World Heritage UNESCO site. Please read about it here; Old Town Lunenburg

After this visit, I continued up to the town of Bridgewater for a 2 night motel stay to wait out the rain forecast for tomorrow.
