NOVA SCOTIA - DAY 70 - AUG 11

Finally the humidity came down and so did the temperature a little bit. I've only been here 4 weeks, so I can say without hesitation, "it's about time". But will it last? And the hoped for clear day made the ride to a scenic area very worthwhile. I was proven correct. The ride up to Cape George was beautifully green with views looking out over St. Georges Bay. Nice farms and gorgeous homes around every corner. The climbs in and around Cape George were nothing compared to Cape Breton.

The lighthouse was the highlight, but the overall scenery was great. I was intrigued by the name "Malignant Cove". It sounded too ugly to be in such a pretty place. Google knows the answer; Malignant Cove is a picturesque community extending along Highway 245 and continuing through the intersection of Highway 337. Settled in 1789 by American 22nd Regiment soldiers, Malignant Cove derives its name from a war vessel, the Malignant, bound for Quebec during the American Revolution. The ship grounded in a storm in the cove and remnants of the ship are believed to still be visible today during major ‘nor-easter storms. A small log chapel was built in 1793 and the first school was built in 1815. There was a large grist mill operating around 1800. A post office was built in 1838 and local service continued until the 1960s. In 1898 a store, saw mill, and lobster factory served the people. In 1915 the Malignant Cove name was changed to Milburn. This name was not accepted by Canada Post and reverted to its original name.

This area has a few B & B's, and I landed at the one and only campground. Granted it was huge and well organised, near a spot on the map called Lower Barneys River. I did catch a sunset shot.

A couple of my friends didn't think sleeping in a cabin on a wooden plank without electricity like I did a few days ago should count as a full camping experience, but maybe a half. And so it will be. This night makes my camping tally a total of 6.5.
