NOVA SCOTIA - DAY 60 - AUG 1

A friend pointed out to me that I actually stayed overnight in Port Hastings, just before Port Hawkesbury. Today was supposed to be a coastal cruise along Bras d'Or Lake. The Nova Scotia map has it marked as a scenic route. Don't be fooled by the gorgeous photos as it turned out to be not quite as expected. There were the usual big rollers going through a wooded area to the coast at West Bay. Afterwards I was on a very deserted and heavily wooded road with almost no views of the water. The trees probably grew up after this was designated a "scenic" route. Finally a great viewing spot in Marble Mountain, one of the very few. You can see some of the islands out in the lake. The road was fine for awhile, then turned very lumpy and finally to gravel the last miles to the highway (105).

And to add insult to injury, this was the hottest and most humid bike ride I have ever taken in my life. I was cooked and took a slight detour to the berg of Orangedale to a convenience store to hydrate. A fellow with a summer home there advised me about a good restaurant and campground just up the main highway a bit. He was right on with his advice as I found Charlene's for a great dinner and the very nice Provincial Park at Wycocomagh right next door. I sat near my tent zombie-like, exhausted from the day's efforts and waiting for the sun to go down. My 4th night camping in 60 days.
